bsg S4 from 2cl
Other than the not insignificant Vidshow weekend (documentation delayed until... see below), I've been able to think of nothing since Friday except BSG's last season premiere. This is not hyperbole. Its magnificence does not bode well for my career or sanity; I'm now attempting to reorganize my life around the serious investment of time and energy that the show's endgame is apparently going to demand. I'm rusty at acute fannishness -- which means, for me, making stuff. And in the spirit of S3's vlog, said stuff is no longer always or even fanfic in the traditional sense. So now, for something a little different [SPOILERS for 4x01]:

BioCylon User Manual (an excerpt)
BioCylon User Manual (an excerpt)

To improve HCI, BioCylons are equipped with an algorithm ("Slash Goggles") which establishes, based on visual data, the variant sexual preferences of human subjects.

That was always Project A. Project B is just as compelling to me, but far too ambitious to have undertaken on my own. However, it turns out that [info]beccatoria has some time and generosity of spirit on her hands. I could tell you a whole flaily tale about how we got connected, but the point is, Becka is one of the smartest and most talented fans I know who's nonetheless relatively indifferent to what I'll call the BSG "scene." Here's how it went down:
  1. I gesticulated wildly in her direction about this cockamamie idea I've had about vidding to audio fragments sourced from the Prelinger Collection, a remarkable public domain archive of mid-century promotional and educational films.
  2. At her invitation, I storyboarded a 30-second vid as an annotated list of time-stamped clips.
  3. BECKA DID MAGIC. As editor and artist, she figured out how to transform my blind text into moving pictures with style and technique and rhythm. I think she enjoyed the puzzle of it? To illustrate her brilliance, here's a snippet of her commentary on the vidding process: "I've decided to go with a lot of long cross-fades in an attempt to get that 1950s vaseline-on-the-lens, shiny future, faux-perfect feel. That and the fact that it's got a slow *beat* with a lot of very fast *notes* and I'm working with more amorphous scene breaks is making it...interesting regarding timing." Keep in mind that she's doing this in WMM, you guys.
  4. I sent back detailed notes on the first draft, which were just as much notes for myself since now I could SEE where my plan wasn't working, and she revised accordingly.
  5. When we'd reached consensus, I did some cosmetic tweaking in iMovie designed credits -- and the long and the short of it is: we made a vidlet together!
The collaborative process was both breathtaking (marveling as my nebulous fantasy materialized in technicolor splendor) and terrifying (being responsible for an artwork that's not fully under my control). It has certainly taught me a TON, already, about vidding -- not the technical aspects, which are still far beyond me, but certainly the possibilities and limitations that come into play between the vision in one's head and the image that can appear onscreen. One of the limitations is that she's not really set up for shiny; you can [DL] but I actually think streaming is the more appropriate viewing experience in this case. Think of the lower quality as part of the archival conceit! NEW: now with MOAR SHINY! we're learning...

Tomorrow -20: What kind of world?
Battlestar Galactica 4.01, "He That Believeth in Me"
first in an "archive of 30-second deadly serious crack vids that will catalogue the season against the backdrop of our own technological history"

While it remains to be seen whether this is possible or advisable, the Plan is that these projects will continue in weekly episodic installments at [info]thearchive2; watch there if you're interested, because I won't be constantly crossposting.

Finally, a quick heads up that the video version of my Swarthmore talk on vidding is posted! It's an extended edition that includes audience questions/comments.

1. YOU FLATTER ME. You may continue. :p
2. There's a BSG scene?! I must have missed it... It's like being in high school again! ;)
3. YOU FLATTER ME MORE! *is vaguely embarassed but pleased you think highly of her*
4. In case any vidders are reading: I'm basically making this up as I go along *vaguely self-conscious*
5. Yes, I am very much enjoying the puzzle of this, and collaborating on a creative product is...really interesting. So vastly different from writing-to-order, or even a rigorous beta. In some ways I figure perhaps this is like a producer/director type thing? With you being head writer & director and me being the editor/artist/actor-type part of that equation? Either way, it's fascinating. Plus I can squee at you.
6. I WORKED OUT HOW TO MAKE IT ABOUT THREE TIMES AS SHINY! Great timing I know, since we just published it, but I figured you'd like to see, so an email is winging its way to you as soon as its finished uploading.
7. I already told you over at [info]thearchive2 that I love that metafic, or whatever you're calling it. It's just awesome.
8. MOAR SHINY! (You'll overcome my Amish tendencies and turn me into a Shiny!Whore yet) :D
9. Tragically I have no icon for "MOAR SHINY" so you can have the Operative instead. Because he's very pretty and once met Kayleigh, who says "Shiny" a lot.

SQUEE!!!

2. apparently I have a whole SEKRIT ANALYSIS of your fannish participation. I believe it is based mostly on the comments I see in your journal, and may very well be COMPLETELY GONZO. I mean, you do show up in [info]galacticanews, and I think people who pay attention have seen your vids, so perhaps I'm underestimating the impact of lurkers. nonetheless, my observation is that the amount of recognition you get from BSG fandom is not commensurate with your GENIUS (your ep reactions are, like, some of the best there are). not that this is a bad thing! developing a fannish reputation demands a certain amount of consistent service to and courting of the community, and I imagine that your participation is motivated more by entertaining and stimulating yourself than by seeking the attention and approval of others. I respect that!

No, no I guess that sounds about accurate. Though I love that I merit SEKRIT ANALYSIS! :p Actually I was more asking what this scene was in case I had missed it than thinking I was already part of it. LJ is so...amorphous I wouldn't be sure how to dive into the social scene even if I wanted to. Though I'm not sure I would. I think you're accurate when you describe me as wanting to share the things that interest me and read things that make me go, "ooooh!" and then being endlessly surprised and happy when other people share those opinions, rather than wanting to get attention for the sake of attention.

It's not that I'm trying to pain myself as some selfless and well adjusted uberfan here. I like getting attention and approval, for sure! But it always feels kinda hollow and boring and odd if it's not for stuff I'm genuinely interested in. The fact I could get five times more reviews if I'd written "I am Kara Thrace," instead of "I am Maya Argo," really doesn't tip the balance in favour of writing something I'm not interested in. :/

Which brings us to the fact that attention is very much tied to production in fandom. Which I think is a generally healthy attitude. But a) I don't produce that much, and b) what I do produce tends to be either gen vids (which never "sells" so well as het or slash), romance for counterships, and meta which devolves into utter crack, utter pretention, or bizarre arguments like how much of an ass Adama is and how I don't want L/K to happen. Which I'm totally happy with cus I think this stuff is awesome! But I think accounts for the lack of attention?

That and the fact that - while I'm very pleased you think so (see! I got me some approval!) - I'm not sure that I'm really as "genius" as you think. There are an awful lot of smart people out there and I'm never really that sure what I'm saying/producing is all that profoundly interesting. The two best things I think I've done in this fandom are, "Jesus Walks" (I feel sad it's not that shiny by modern standards!) which really did get a huge number of reviews - the one thing I've done that got a lot of attention - and "I am Maya Argo," which was never going to take anything by storm by virtue of it being girlslash about a middle-aged woman and a character with five minutes of cumulative screen time!

So I guess that was a really long, self-centred way of saying, "No, you're right, I just think I'm so far out of the BSG "scene" that I'm not even sure who is big in it..." My opinions on "big names" are doubtless horribly skewed by my absurd reading habits!

And now I'll stop this tangent!

Which brings us to the fact that attention is very much tied to production in fandom. Which I think is a generally healthy attitude.

indeed, I totally agree. I experience a similar selectivity because I'll also never be very a) prolific or b) mainstream in my interests and approaches. when assessing your genius I suppose I should take into account the fact that I give everyone who's mostly interested in Adama/Roslin and/or Kara/Lee a wide berth -- and that's the lion's share of the fandom. so it goes both ways. I'm sure lots of these folks have smart things to say, but their shippery makes me too twitchy to really pay attention. there's a certain school of gratuitous pilot girlsexing that I appreciate, but for the most part I could care less about the whole Starbuck's Creek soap opera which consumes so much attention. and the femslashers I tend to think of as my little interpretive community rather than the fandom at large -- you are possibly the only non-femslash-obsessed BSG person on my flist?

but listen, I know smart, and believe me when I tell you that YOU ARE IT. I don't know if you remember this, but you ended up on my flist because you wrote the ONLY interesting commentary on The Resistance out of ALL the posts that went through the newsletter. and I agree with your assessment of your work -- THAT VID and THAT FIC, they just FILL ME WITH FLAIL. I don't even know how to handle their EXTREME AWESOMENESS. I'm glad to hear you think Jesus Walks got a reasonable amount of feedback, because boy do you deserve it. there's nothing I can do about the marginalization of the Maya fic which is rather heartbreaking. in general I think the relations between het and femslash in the fandom are pretty open (though this operates differently among Laura-ites vs. Kara-ites), but still I don't see many of the het shippers reading our fic (even when it's especially good). I keep meaning to put together a comprehensive set of must-read femslash recs, but the project is rather overwhelming.

Between you and BSG, I may die of awesome. I'm just saying.
14th-Apr-2008 12:41 am (UTC)
I love this whole idea. ::squeeble:: Can't wait to see what else you come up with! A series -- collect 'em all!

(May I put in a plug for some kind of advertising vidlet, PSA, or station identification? Because that would rawk.)
15th-Apr-2008 05:28 pm (UTC)
she loves us! *bouncebouncebounce*

WE R EXPERIMENAL! obviously some of [info]zoetrope's work is a big inspiration for this. I ALSO can't wait to see how it turns out as a series -- because we have NO IDEA what we're doing. what an irresistible chronicle of the season though, right? if this project doesn't KILL ME first!

(I will do my best! thus far I have been proceeding on the "I know it when I see it" principle of audio selection. I feel like I have to be relatively anvillicious about highlighting a clear theme, because the show and the audio are difficult to articulate coherently without detouring into simple humor. this is complicated by the fact that virtually none of the films in the archive (unlike, for example, THIS diverting collection) are under a few minutes long, so I also have to sift for stand-alone fragments that I can isolate. if an especially cracktastic episode comes along, though, all bets are off! I already have this blurb about the AMAZING TV REMOTE CONTROL that I'm itching to make into a Cylon vid.)

Hey. I added this one of your profiles too. I don't know why I didn't a year ago. Also, I'm now obsessed with bsg to the point of wanting to think about nothing else (this is largely your fault!) and wanting to read other people's thoughts on it all the time - any bsg blogs or lj's you recommend?
