This is what I wore two days ago for a day spent reading, writing, and taking a quick tour of the Munich City Museum. Besides learning about Munich’s history and traditions in the “Typically Munich!” portion of the museum, I discovered an amazing contemporary photographer from Berlin named Eva Bertram. Her collection “2 Ein Kind” is now on exhibit at the Münchner Stadtmuseum and I found it fascinating. Bookmark that name and see her work if you ever get a chance to in the future.

As for my outfit, I apologize for wearing the same ol’ jeans again and the same ol’ boots and even the very same cardigan I wore in my last picture. I’m a bad style blogger; I wear the same stuff over and over and you don’t even know the half of it since I don’t post every single outfit or you’d behold the magnitude of my repetitiveness. But living out of two suitcases will do that to you and, to be honest, I really don’t mind. Since I brought only things I really love, I’m finding it oddly comforting to not have a large collection of items but just a few well worn in and beloved go-to’s to throw on every morning.

Happy Friday, everyone! S.

Rewatched "Pop Britannia" and one of the main things that I noticed this time around is that pop stars in the fifties and sixties were... definitely not ugly, but also not the sort of airbrushed symmetrical perfection that one expects from pop stars today. Many of them couldn't really dance either.

Cue complaints about how music is all just stage-managed image nowadays? Well, no, in part because you couldn't get any more packaged than fifties pop. But it is interesting that what gets prioritised has changed.

End Notes:

After flying overnight — baby e. was a champ! — I am back home in the frigid Midwest, trying to remember how to layer for stylish warmth. It was a wonderful visit with family and friends, and even though baby e. won’t remember this trip it was exciting to introduce him to the people and culture that have been formative of my identity.

For the past several years, my trips back to Hawaii have sparked mini wardrobe-identification crises. Hawaii’s culture is very laid back, and I grew up with a wardrobe (and friends and aunties with wardrobes) comprised primarily of shorts, rubber slippers, and t-shirts. When I went off to college, I took that “look” with me as a signifier of my cultural affiliation. I was the “Hawaii girl” in surf company brand shirts, jeans, slippers (aka “flip flops”), and the occasional fabric flower tucked behind my ear. Now, having lived on the mainland for nine years, my style has evolved to reflect new tastes as well as my personal and professional aspirations.

So, when I return to Hawaii, which wardrobe makes an appearance? Do I bring along a little structured jacket that screams “mainland”! Do I dress to announce my status as a cultural insider? Does the fact that I have to ponder this mean that I’ve relinquished that status? I remember a couple of years back when I wore what I considered to be a very casual outfit of a gray tee, brown bermudas, and a turquoise bead necklace. My mom took one look at me and asked why I was so dressed up.

I haven’t completely figured out where I stand on all of this, nor do I think that the relationship of dress to culture is transparent or direct. But I was quite happy with the balance of this outfit that I wore on one of our last days in the islands: crisp pieces with a draped, light cardigan, wooden accessories, and the ubiquitous slippers. Regardless of whether I “passed” as a local girl or everyone presumed that I was a tourist, I can recognize the value of embracing a hybrid style.

Besides, what post-colonial scholar doesn’t love a third space?

AHHHHHH, I HATE BAMVIDEOVAULT. I know everyone likes it and thank G-d it's been there since so many other sites have kicked vidders out in one way or another, but for some reason I'm having huge problems with it. I think there's something wrong with my files. I must figure it out so I can upload my festivids present tonight....!!!!!!

7th-Jan-2010 04:53 pm - Vid Rec: Shelter (movie)
[info]cherryice has just released I'll Follow You Tonight, a vid for the movie Shelter. I have not seen Shelter, but now I want to.

The vid concerns a young man in quiet conflict with his emotions. There's a girlfriend and a boyfriend, you see, and he's struggling with both. There are stunning visuals of the ocean and the quality of light in this video is just delicious, all golden and shiny. The vid is moving as well as beautiful, offering subtle metaphors and clear storytelling with a light touch. If you know [info]cherryice's work, you know you don't want to miss this. Four stars. Laura Bob says check it out.
7th-Jan-2010 07:11 pm - Year in Review II: Production
Ah, 2009, the year I fell off the crack wagon and onto my head. First this happened, then this. I don't even know.

Murphy Brown/Pundit RPF
Holding Pattern [AO3] Murphy Brown/Rachel Maddow, Teen. Began 03/04/09; finished 05/12/09; posted 05/12/09. 1,622 words.
Love Is Like a Bottle of Scotch [AO3] Murphy Brown/Linda Ellerbee, Teen. Began 03/26/09; finished 05/26/09; posted 05/26/09. 540 words.
Peanuts and Cracker Jacks [AO3] Rachel Maddow/Murphy Brown, General Audiences. Began 05/12/09; finished 07/02/09; posted 07/02/09. 1,306 words.
The Good Life [AO3] Murphy Brown/Rachel Maddow, Teen. Began 07/02/09; finished 07/08/09; posted 07/08/09. 1,295 words.

This all started when [info]bessemerprocess prompted Rachel is out, but Murphy may never be for [info]lgbtfest. I may write one more story in this universe: I have a fragment of Rachel talking to Corky at nerdprom, and that setting would also allow Murphy and Ana to interact.

Babylon 5/Pundit RPF
Seven Things About Susan [AO3] Susan Ivanova & Rachel Maddow, General Audiences. Written and posted 07/13/09. 959 words.

Yeah, this was also at [info]bessemerprocess's instigation.

Xena: Warrior Princess
The Architecture of Our Time [AO3] Melinda Pappas/Janice Covington, Explicit. Began 01/26/09; finished 07/23/09; posted 07/23/09. 5,443 words.

This is the longest thing I've written, and I don't think I got it quite right, but I don't think I got it all wrong, either.

Disney RPF
Showtime [AO3] Selena Gomez/Demi Lovato, General Audiences. Began 11/10/09; finished 12/21/09; posted 12/12/09. 1,337 words.
Domestic Rites, Selena Gomez/Demi Lovato, Teen. Began 12/05/09; finished 12/21/09; posted 12/25/09. 1,945 words.
Kiss & Tell, Selena Gomez/Demi Lovato, General Audiences. Began 12/24/09; finished 12/25/09; posted 12/26/09. 324 words.

I cannot even. I think I started following [info]pirateygoodness after she wrote the Bleighton spy!AU, and then she posted about these Disney people and I ignored it because what do I care about that? And then...and then I did start to care and offered it for [info]yuletide and, well, here we are.

According to AO3, that's 14,771 words all together, every last one written within the year, which is an all-time fucking high for me. Thank you, crack. Except, it's not so crack-y because almost all of these stories are about the crushing psychic violence exerted by the closet. Which, um. Do I have residual closet issues I am not aware of? Something to ponder.

What’s the first thing you think of when I say Chuck? a) Ground beef b) Charlie Brown c) Why is it not preceded by “I’m” and followed by “Bass?” d) Agent! Sarah! Walker!

If your answers are anything but d) then might I suggest you tune in today starting at 5 p.m. for the eight-hour Chuck marathon on SyFy network. Last spring the action-comedy about a hapless nerd Chuck (Zachary Levi) who accidentally becomes a super spy and is protected by Agent Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) defied the odds thanks to a strong online fan campaign and was picked up for a full third season.
